Four Responders Hurt in Secondary Crash on I-26 in Kingsport, TN

September 22, 2026

Kingsport, TN (September 22, 2026) – Four emergency responders were injured on Monday night, September 21, after a vehicle struck them while they were helping at an earlier collision on Interstate 26 near Exit 6. A second vehicle then struck the responders as they worked at the site.

According to the Kingsport Fire Department, they had just begun loading a patient into an ambulance when the second vehicle struck three responders and a fourth working nearby. All four were taken to a hospital for treatment.

Two of the injured responders have since been released. The remaining two stayed hospitalized as of Tuesday morning with non-life-threatening injuries.

The investigation into what happened remains active.

We are thinking of the responders and their families as they recover.

What Is Tennessee's Move Over Law in Kingsport, TN?

Tennessee's Move Over Law requires drivers approaching a stopped emergency, utility, or highway vehicle with flashing lights to move into a non-adjacent lane when possible, or slow to a safe speed if changing lanes is not an option.

Violating the Move Over Law can result in citations, but it can also factor into civil liability if a driver's failure to slow down or change lanes contributes to someone being hurt. Tennessee follows a modified comparative fault system, which means that if a driver violates a safety statute like this one may bear a larger share of responsibility for resulting injuries.

Determining fault after a roadside accident usually depends on dash-camera footage, witness statements, and vehicle data recorders, some of which may not stay available for long.

A car accident lawyer in Kingsport can help gather that evidence quickly and explain how a move-over violation may affect a liability claim.

Roadside injury claims tend to involve extra questions about equipment, camera footage, and how a move-over violation affects fault. At Fox & Farmer, we can look into what evidence may be available for your case and how it applies under Tennessee law.
