Emergency units took her to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The Chattanooga Police Department said the driver attempted to swerve but was unable to avoid the collision.

The investigation into what led to the wreck is expected to continue in the coming days.

Who Can File a Wrongful Death Claim in Chattanooga, TN?

In Tennessee, a wrongful death claim is typically filed by the deceased person's surviving spouse, children, or, if neither exists, another qualified representative of the estate.

This right exists specifically because the person who died can no longer bring a personal injury claim on their own behalf, so state law designates who may step in.

Damages in a Tennessee wrongful death claim can include funeral and burial costs, medical expenses connected to the final injury, and the financial support the deceased would have provided to surviving family members.

Courts may also consider the loss of a loved one's companionship and guidance when they evaluate a claim. Tennessee generally requires wrongful death claims to be filed within one year, though certain circumstances can affect that timeline.

Chattanooga's busy corridors see significant pedestrian and vehicle traffic throughout the week, and losses like this can leave families facing decisions about medical bills, estate matters, and insurance claims all at once.

For these claims, it is important to gather documentation such as medical records, witness statements, and accident reports, which can take time. To navigate this process, a Chattanooga wrongful death lawyer can help a family understand what evidence supports a wrongful death claim and how the process typically unfolds.

Filing a wrongful death claim while grieving a loved one can feel overwhelming, especially when medical bills and other costs continue to arrive. At Fox & Farmer, we are open to help families understand which damages may apply to their specific situations and how to proceed.
