School Bus Involved in Injury Crash on I-65 in Madison, TN

August 18, 2026

Madison, TN (August 18, 2026) – A school bus carrying 19 children was involved in a collision on Tuesday morning, August 18, on Interstate 65 near Old Hickory Boulevard in Madison.

The collision was reported shortly after 7:30 a.m. in the southbound lanes near mile marker 93. The bus driver and one child were taken to a hospital with minor injuries, while the other children were picked up by another Davidson Academy bus.

The school said all parents had been notified and that no serious injuries were reported. At least seven ambulances were sent to the roadway as emergency crews assisted those involved.

Authorities continue investigating.

We hope the driver and child recover quickly from their injuries.

What Liability Rules Apply to School Bus Crashes in Madison, TN?

When a child is injured during transportation to school, determining who may be legally responsible can require examining the conduct of the drivers, the school transportation provider, and other potentially involved parties.

Tennessee generally follows a modified comparative fault system, which means a person's recovery can be reduced according to their percentage of fault, and a claimant who is more than 50% at fault generally cannot recover.

School bus cases can also involve records that are different from those in an ordinary passenger-vehicle claim. Tennessee requires school bus accidents involving pupil injury or death to be reported to the Department of Education within specified timeframes, which creates transportation records that may become relevant when determining what occurred. State rules also establish minimum liability insurance requirements for school bus transportation.

When multiple children are aboard a bus, documenting each injured passenger's medical treatment separately can be important. A child's medical records, statements from witnesses, transportation records, and available photographs or video may help establish how the collision occurred and whether another driver's conduct contributed to the injuries.

The circumstances of a school bus collision can involve multiple parties and competing accounts, which makes a careful review of the available evidence useful. A bus accident lawyer can examine those records and explain how comparative fault and potentially applicable insurance coverage may affect an injured child's claim.
