Hit-and-Run Leaves Man Dead on Longbranch Rd in Hohenwald, TN

October 16, 2026

Hohenwald, TN (October 16, 2026) – A man was killed early Thursday, October 15, after a vehicle hit him on Longbranch Road in Lewis County. The driver did not stay, and the vehicle has not been found.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, a passerby spotted the man lying in the road around 4 a.m. and called 911. Emergency units arrived in the 200 block of Longbranch Road and found evidence that a vehicle had struck him. He died as a result of the crash.

Authorities continue to search for the responsible driver, and the investigation is ongoing.

Our condolences go out to his family and friends.

How a Hit-and-Run Shapes Wrongful Death Claims in Hohenwald, TN

When the driver who caused a death leaves without being identified, a wrongful death claim faces obstacles that other claims do not. Tennessee allows a wrongful death action to be filed by the personal representative or by a surviving spouse, children, or next of kin, but there must be a defendant to name.

Until the driver is identified, a family may not have anyone to sue directly, which is why the case commonly develops on two tracks: the search for the driver and the review of insurance coverage that does not depend on finding that person.

Timing matters on both tracks. Tennessee generally gives families one year from the date of death to file a wrongful death lawsuit, and the one-year period can continue to run while the driver remains unknown.

Evidence can also work against a family. Paint transfer, vehicle parts left behind, and nearby camera footage can disappear quickly, and a witness's memory can fade. If a driver is later identified, a criminal case does not replace a civil claim, and the two proceed under different standards and timelines.

Families in Hohenwald and across Lewis County may find that rural stretches offer fewer cameras and fewer passersby than busy city streets. That can make documentation gathered early, such as photos, witness contact details, and any records of the person's income and expenses, more valuable to a later claim.

Uninsured motorist coverage may be available when a driver is never found, depending on the policy terms and what proof the insurer requires. A wrongful death attorney may help review those policies, track the one-year deadline, and work to preserve evidence while it still exists.
