Two Injured in Multi-Truck Crash on I-40 in Hickory Withe, TN

October 6, 2026

Hickory Withe, TN (October 6, 2026) – On Tuesday, October 6, two drivers were hurt in a collision that involved three commercial vehicles on Interstate 40 in Hickory Withe just after midnight.

According to the Fayette County Emergency Management Agency, the wreck happened between the Gallaway/Oakland exit and the Covington/Somerville exit. One of the semi-trucks overturned and spilled about 3,000 gallons of sodium hydroxide.

All eastbound lanes were closed because of the overturned semi-truck. Emergency units addressed the chemical spill. A diversion route was reported about 20 minutes after the wreck was called in.

It is not yet clear what led to the accident. The investigation is ongoing.

Our thoughts are with both drivers as they recover.

Why Trucking Records Matter in Injury Claims in Hickory Withe, TN

Commercial truck drivers who operate across state lines work under federal safety rules, and those rules produce paper and electronic records that can matter in an injury claim in Hickory Withe.

Hours-of-service limits cap how long a driver may operate before taking required rest, and electronic logging devices record driving time. Carriers also generally must keep driver qualification files and vehicle inspection and maintenance records.

However, it is important to consider that those records do not stay available forever. Under federal rules, carriers generally must keep hours-of-service logs and supporting documents for about six months. Additionally, data stored in a truck's engine computer or dashcam may be overwritten once the truck returns to service.

A preservation letter sent by a truck accident lawyer in Tennessee promptly can ask a carrier to keep logs, dispatch records, maintenance files, and onboard data, though what a carrier must keep can depend on the circumstances.

It can be hard to keep in mind all these details alone after recovering from the injuries of a truck accident. Therefore, Fox & Farmer is open to help drivers understand how federal trucking rules and Tennessee deadlines may apply to a claim involving a commercial vehicle.
