Our thoughts are with those affected as they receive medical care.
Tennessee's financial responsibility law sets minimum liability limits of $25,000 per person and $50,000 total for bodily injury, plus $25,000 for property damage. Those numbers are a floor, not a ceiling, and many drivers carry exactly the minimum. A single hospital stay can cost far more than $25,000, so an at-fault driver's policy may not cover every bill.
That gap is where a person's own policy can matter. Under Tennessee law, auto policies must include uninsured motorist coverage unless the policyholder rejects it in writing, and underinsured motorist coverage may apply when the other driver's limits fall short. The details vary from policy to policy, so reading the actual policy language matters.
Many people turn to a car accident lawyer in Knoxville to help them request policy information, compare the available limits with medical bills and lost income, and explain whether other coverage might come into play. That review can happen alongside treatment, before decisions about any settlement offer.
At Fox & Farmer, we can look over the policies involved and explain how Tennessee's coverage rules may apply to your situation.
