Chattanooga, TN (September 27, 2026) – A man was seriously injured on Friday evening, September 25, after being struck by another vehicle while standing outside his car following an earlier crash on westbound I-24 in Chattanooga.
The first crash involved two vehicles and happened around 7:20 p.m. Both vehicles pulled onto the right shoulder after the collision. Shortly afterward, one of the drivers got out of his vehicle.
A third vehicle approaching the stopped traffic entered the shoulder and struck the man's car. The force of the collision threw the man a distance from where he was standing, according to police.
Paramedics took the man to a local hospital, where he was reported to be in stable condition with serious injuries.
We hope the injured man receives the medical attention he needs and makes a full recovery.
Fault after a secondary crash may involve more than reviewing the first collision. Investigators may examine the actions of the drivers involved in both crashes, vehicle positions, traffic conditions, and what happened before the third vehicle entered the shoulder.
The location of the vehicles from the first crash can be relevant. Photos and other records may show where the cars stopped, how much of the shoulder they occupied, and whether they remained visible to approaching traffic.
Those details may then be considered alongside the third driver's actions. Information about traffic speed, visibility, lane changes, braking, and the decision to enter the shoulder can help establish how the second collision occurred.
Witness accounts and available video can provide another perspective. Dashcam recordings, surveillance footage, traffic cameras, and statements from drivers or others who saw the crash may help clarify the sequence of events.
The consequences of the second collision may also need to be documented. Hospital records, diagnostic testing, follow-up treatment, rehabilitation, and other medical records can help establish the injuries and related expenses.
Those injuries may also lead to financial losses if they affect the man's ability to work. Pay stubs, employer records, missed shifts, and other expense records can help document these losses.
