Vehicle Overturns After Crash on Granville Hwy in Smith Co., TN

September 10, 2026

Smith County, TN (September 10, 2026) – On Thursday, September 10, two motorists received medical care after a two-car crash sent one vehicle down an embankment and into a creek at Granville Highway and Austin Lane in Smith County. The collision occurred shortly before 9:00 a.m.

The Smith County Rescue Squad said crews found one vehicle overturned in the creek with a person trapped inside. The other motorist was easier to reach and received medical care.

Rescue crews established a rope system to reach the trapped motorist. They removed the person from the vehicle, placed them in a Stokes basket, and brought them up the embankment.

Vanderbilt LifeFlight was positioned nearby for further patient care. Additional details about the motorists’ injuries or hospital transportation have not been released.

The circumstances leading to the crash remain under investigation.

We hope both motorists make a full recovery.

Why Are Rollover Accidents So Dangerous in Smith County, TN?

Rollover accidents are dangerous because your body can experience force from several directions as a vehicle turns over. Head, neck, spinal, chest, and internal injuries may occur, particularly if you strike parts of the vehicle or the passenger compartment is damaged.

When a vehicle leaves the roadway, surrounding terrain can create additional hazards. Embankments, trees, guardrails, rocks, or water may affect how the vehicle lands and increase the risk of serious injury.

If you become trapped after a rollover, reaching medical care can also take longer. Rescue crews may need ropes, stabilization equipment, or other specialized tools before they can safely remove you from the vehicle.

As investigators determine what happened, evidence may include photographs, crash reports, available video, vehicle data, witness statements, and vehicle damage. This information can help establish how the collision occurred and what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway.

Under Tennessee law, you may generally recover compensation if you are less than 50% responsible for the crash. However, your recovery can be reduced according to your percentage of fault.

As your claim moves forward, a car accident lawyer can review liability issues and available insurance coverage. An attorney can also address disputes with insurers that may affect your ability to recover compensation.
