August 19, 2026

Carter County, TN (August 19, 2026) – A multi-vehicle collision involving members of the Milligan University cycling team left two people dead and several others injured on Wednesday morning, August 19, on Highway 19E near Simerly Creek Road in Hampton.

According to preliminary reports from state authorities, a motor vehicle struck the group of student bicyclists traveling along the highway. Emergency crews arrived shortly after receiving urgent calls regarding the crash.

Ballad Health confirmed that two individuals tragically died from their injuries at the scene. Paramedics provided on-scene stabilization to several other cyclists, and at least one critically injured victim was airlifted to Johnson City Medical Center for specialized trauma care.

Local authorities continue to investigate the cause and circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.

Our deepest condolences go out to the families, loved ones, and the entire university community during this devastating time.

What Legal Rights Do Bicycle Accident Victims Have in Carter County, TN?

After a bicycle accident in Tennessee, injured cyclists and families of fatal crash victims have the legal right to seek financial compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and wrongful death through civil claims against a negligent driver. Establishing liability requires proving that the motorist violated traffic laws, failed to yield, or failed to maintain a proper lookout.

To prove negligence, claims often rely on state traffic laws created to protect riders. In Tennessee, bicyclists hold the exact same legal rights and duties on public roads as motor vehicle drivers. Furthermore, Tennessee’s "3-Foot Passing Law" explicitly mandates that drivers overtaking a bicycle must maintain at least three feet of safe clearance until safely past.

When a driver breaches these duties and causes a fatal crash, surviving family members can pursue a wrongful death claim. This action allows relatives to seek compensation for funeral costs, lost financial support, and the loss of emotional companionship.

However, financial recovery depends heavily on how fault is assigned. Under Tennessee’s modified comparative fault rule, a victim or surviving estate can recover damages as long as the cyclist's share of responsibility is under 50 percent, though any award is reduced proportionally by their percentage of fault.

Navigating these fault rules requires gathering prompt physical evidence. Personal injury and wrongful death attorneys support victims and bereaved families by conducting independent scene investigations, securing police reconstruction reports, handling insurance negotiations, and pursuing full accountability under Tennessee law.
