Two Injured, One Seriously, in Crash on I-240 in Memphis, TN

September 14, 2026

Memphis, TN (September 14, 2026) – On Monday, September 14, two people were hurt, one of them seriously, in an overnight collision on Interstate 240 near Poplar Avenue in Memphis.

The Memphis Police Department was called to the area just before 2:00 a.m. for a crash that involved a car and a street sweeper truck. Police said a woman was seriously wounded, while a man involved was also hurt but is expected to recover.

Police are still piecing together how the collision unfolded.

We hope those involved have a full recovery.

What Is the Statute of Limitations for an Accident Caused by a City-Owned Vehicle in Memphis, TN?

People injured when a city-owned vehicle causes an accident in Memphis, TN, may face a 12-month deadline to bring a claim against the governmental entity under Tennessee’s Governmental Tort Liability Act. Tenn. Code Ann. § 29-20-305 provides that an action against a governmental entity must generally be commenced within 12 months after the cause of action arises.

This deadline is different from the general one-year personal injury limitations period in Tennessee, but the governmental-entity rules can impose additional requirements. A claim must involve circumstances in which governmental immunity has been removed under the Tennessee Governmental Tort Liability Act. The government entity also has 60 days to respond to a claim brought under the Act.

After an accident involving a city-owned vehicle, injured people should preserve crash reports, medical records, photographs, insurance information, witness statements, vehicle damage records, and available video footage. Documentation showing that the vehicle was government-owned and identifying the employee or department involved may also be relevant.

Understanding the 12-month statute of limitations for claims against governmental entities in Tennessee is important because missing the applicable deadline can prevent a claim from moving forward. Additional rules may apply depending on the governmental entity and circumstances of the accident, so the specific facts should be reviewed promptly.

A truck accident lawyer can help sort out whether a claim involves a city entity, a private contractor, or both, since that distinction affects which rules and deadlines apply. An attorney can also explain what types of compensation may be available once liability among the parties becomes clearer.

Cases with government vehicles involved come with extra steps that a typical claim wouldn't require. At Fox & Farmer, we have experience working through this kind of process for people in Tennessee.
