One Killed, One Airlifted in Truck Hit-and-Run on I-81 in Greene Co., TN

August 11, 2026

Greene County, TN (August 11, 2026) – A 74-year-old man died, and a passenger sustained serious injuries on Sunday afternoon, August 9, following a hit-and-run crash involving a semi-truck along Interstate 81 near mile marker 18.

Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers reported that a grey 2020 Nissan Murano traveling southbound hit the rear tire of a white bobtail semi-truck day cab. The impact caused the Murano to overturn multiple times before coming to rest on the shoulder.

The driver of the Murano was ejected during the rollover and pronounced dead at the scene. Emergency medical personnel airlifted an injured passenger in the Murano to Johnson City Medical Center for treatment of severe injuries.

Troopers noted that the semi-truck driver pulled onto the shoulder, inspected the truck, and then drove away from the scene without leaving identification or rendering aid.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol is still investigating the crash.

Our sincere condolences go out to the victim's family, and our thoughts remain with the injured passenger as they work towards recovery.

Can Families Pursue Recovery When a Commercial Truck Flees the Scene in Greene County, TN?

Yes, surviving family members and injured victims can pursue financial recovery through Uninsured Motorist (UM) auto insurance provisions or civil wrongful death claims once the commercial vehicle or its operator is identified.

Under Tennessee law, UM policies may provide compensation when an at-fault motorist flees the scene of a crash in Greene County. This coverage can help address certain financial losses while law enforcement continues working to identify the driver and determine what happened.

In the meantime, insurance recovery can become especially important when a commercial vehicle crash results in catastrophic injuries or the loss of a loved one. If a commercial driver leaves without providing registration or identity details, injured passengers and families may face significant costs, including emergency air transport, intensive care, final arrangement expenses, and lost household support.

For that reason, filing an uninsured motorist claim or pursuing a third-party investigation may help families evaluate their options while authorities work to locate the fleeing vehicle.

A lawyer familiar with Tennessee law can review roadway evidence, analyze traffic-camera footage, coordinate with state troopers, and handle communications with insurance adjusters. Legal guidance may also help families evaluate the available sources of financial compensation.
