Nashville, TN (September 28, 2026) – A passenger died early Sunday, September 27, after a car left Briley Parkway and crossed I-65 North before hitting a median.
The 24-year-old man had been arguing with the 20-year-old driver of the car just before it left the road, according to a preliminary investigation.
The driver told investigators the passenger grabbed the steering wheel during the argument and consequently sent the car down an embankment and across all lanes of the interstate. The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver was taken to a medical center and is reportedly in stable condition. No further details about the wreck were available.
Investigators continue to look into the accident.
We extend our sincere condolences to the passenger's family.
When a person's own actions inside a moving vehicle contribute to a crash, Tennessee's modified comparative fault rules can come into play in unexpected ways.
Under this system, a person found 50 percent or more at fault generally cannot recover damages, while someone found less than half at fault may still recover a reduced amount based on their share of responsibility.
Determining fault in a case that involved an in-vehicle disturbance can depend on evidence that can be difficult to gather after the fact. Witness accounts, cell phone records, and any available vehicle data can help establish the sequence of events leading up to a crash.
Insurance coverage questions can grow more complex when the circumstances leading to a crash are unusual, since insurers may dispute how fault should be divided between multiple parties. A personal injury case involving a disputed sequence of events typically benefits from the thorough early legal guidance from a car accident lawyer that can manage an investigation before evidence becomes harder to locate.
