I-75 and I-40 run together west of Knoxville until they split just before Lenoir City and after the 162 turnoff to Oak Ridge. A large number of commuters make their way to these and other suburban communities, such as Farragut and Aldenwood Park.

But I-75 is also the major route west to Chattanooga, while I-40 heads towards Nashville and Memphis. This means a lot of long-distance traffic takes this route too, and commercial truck accidents are not uncommon.

The highway runs through dense parts of metropolitan Knoxville with little leeway for expansion in places, and commercial buildings back right onto the highway. This is, thus, an expensive proposition.

The high density also results in multiple junctions. Because of insufficient space and lanes, there is no local/long-distance lane split. This lack of separation causes local congestion that affects both long-distance truckers and road trippers.

All of this makes this the most dangerous stretch of I-40. It is a place where you should drive cautiously and avoid peak hours if possible.
