Protecting Victims in Knoxville and

Surrounding Areas

Last December, a motorcyclist died after swerving into a semi-truck on I-40. This motorcycle accident is far from the only recent incident in the West Knoxville Corridor where I-40 meets I-75. Another, in November, involved a semi truck rear-ending an SUV, resulting in multiple personal injuries. This is the busiest stretch of freeway in Tennessee. When serious crashes happen here, a Knoxville truck accident lawyer can help victims understand their legal options.

Why is This Stretch of Freeway a Problem

The biggest issue is the sheer volume of traffic. However, the I-75/I-40 split is also a complex

junction with multiple merges and splits, increasing the risk of something happening. I-40

continues west towards Cookville and is ultimately the main road to Nashville, while I-75 turns

south and is the main route to Chattanooga. The stretch where they run together thus has to

manage traffic for two major routes as well as commuter traffic for the western suburbs of

Knoxville.

Much of the long-distance traffic in all directions consists of freight traffic, especially on I-40,

which is also the direct route to the main FedEx hub in Memphis. All of this adds to the risk of

car wrecks and commercial truck accidents.

What Is Being Done

TDOT has been working on an improvement program for the area designed to improve safety

and reduce congestion. Locals often use GPS to avoid the freeway, increasing traffic on back

roads. However, these changes will likely take a couple more years to decide on and then more

years to implement. Meanwhile, growing populations and new suburban developments continue

to increase traffic.

How Can You Stay Safe?

Avoid this stretch of road if you have another good route. If not, then practice good situational

awareness. If you do get into a car accident, especially one involving a commercial truck, you

may suffer serious injuries. You may need a Knoxville truck accident lawyer to help you pursue

the compensation you deserve.
