How do I know if I am eligible for disability benefits?

It is both frustrating and overwhelming for a Tennessee resident when he or she is unable to work because of a debilitating medical condition. When you are unable to hold gainful employment, it is a direct threat to the financial well-being of your family. While this is a serious situation, there could be options for certain types of financial support available to you.

If you find yourself in this situation, you could be eligible for benefits through Social Security. Social Security Disability benefits are not available to everyone who is sick or who is suffering from an injury, but you would be wise to learn if you are eligible and how you can apply for this support.

Who is eligible?

One of the most important things to understand when seeking disability benefits is to understand who qualifies. The only people who can get these benefits are the individuals who have certain qualifying medical conditions. The Social Security Administration has a strict definition of disability, and the following medical conditions qualify as disabling:

  • Vision problems and hearing loss
  • Musculoskeletal problems
  • Heart failure and other types of cardiovascular conditions
  • Asthma, cystic fibrosis and other respiratory illnesses
  • Digestive tract problems, such as liver disease
  • Blood disorders, such as hemophilia or sickle cell disease
  • Certain types of mental conditions
  • Disorders of the immune system

This is not necessarily a conclusive list of illnesses that could qualify a person for disability benefits. If your disabling medical condition is not on the above list, you could still get disability support.

If your condition is not on the list, you must be able to prove that your specific physical or mental disability is impairing to the point that you are unable to work and earn a living. Specific medical documentation is necessary, as are other types of documentation and evidence.

The process of getting benefits

Actually obtaining the benefits you deserve can be complex, even with a validating medical condition and plenty of evidence to validate your claim. In many cases, first-time applications come back denied. Whether you are completing your application or you wish to appeal a denial, you do not have to take one step alone.

A disabling medical condition may have robbed you of your ability to work and earn a living, but you have certain options. You can start the process of securing rightful disability benefits by seeking help regarding your claim as soon as possible.
