Memphis VA Medical Center under fire for poor care

The Memphis VA Medical Center is coming under fire after continued reports of poor care. Statements were issued earlier in September by members of the congressional delegation from the state of Tennessee about the "reprehensible and unacceptable" quality of care reported at the VA.

An investigation by the USA Today network that included the release of thousands of documents found that veterans underwent unnecessary amputations and unintended paralyzations. The documents also revealed a list of government investigations into the Memphis VA facility that date back to 2011.

The internal ratings system from the VA gave the facility in Memphis a one-star rating, the lowest possible. The rating puts the facility among the worst VA facilities in the country. Because of the one-star rating, the facility is monitored on a weekly basis by the department's Undersecretary of Health.

A new director for the facility was hired back in May after spending decades in the Army. The new hire managed a hospital in Hawaii while in the Army and was also deployed twice during his career. He reportedly has been putting new practices in place as he reviews policies and other issues at the facility.

Tennessee congressional delegates also called on Congress to investigate the issues at the Memphis VA. The facility has supposedly been under investigation by the House Veterans Affairs Committee since January of this year.
