Labor Day weekend driving tips

In just over a week, the nation will be celebrating Labor Day weekend. It is widely regarded as the last great opportunity for a summer getaway since children will go back to school the following week. With that, millions are expected to take to the road across the country in spite of higher gas prices spurned by the weather issues in Texas.

With that said, drivers in Knoxville and throughout Tennessee will have to be particularly careful as Labor Day weekend is one of the most dangerous times to be on the road.

This post will highlight a number of tips.

Drive for the conditions – While our region probably won’t see severe weather, construction and heavy traffic could make for frustrated drivers who follow too closely for the conditions. Riding someone’s bumper doesn’t make traffic go faster. Even worse, rear end collisions are more likely in these conditions. With that, drivers must maintain safe speeds and distances for the conditions.

Limit distractions – While public service announcements may focus on texting and driving, distracted driving is about more than just using one’s phone while behind the wheel. Admonishing unruly kids and eating while driving can take a driver’s attention away from the road.

Drive rested – Drowsy driving can be just as dangerous as distracted driving or drunk driving. So while you want to make the most of your holiday, you should be rested while behind the wheel.
