Study Shows Many Children in Fatal Car Crashes Were Not Properly Secured

Did you know that motor vehicle crashes were the leading cause of death for children under the age of 13? Keeping your child properly secured in your car can help to prevent severe injuries and even death in the event of a car accident.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), every day in 2011, two children under the age of 13 were killed and another 338 were injured in motor vehicle accidents. Out of those who died, four in 10 were not restrained when the accident occurred.

It's important to ensure that your children are properly restrained while riding in your car. Depending on their age, height and weight, they should be using a car seat, booster or seatbelt. You may think your child is old enough to move from a car seat to a booster, but according to the NHTSA, 14 percent of children ages one to three are put into a booster seat too soon, and 25 percent of children ages four to seven are using seatbelts too soon.

For younger children, it's important to ensure that they're in a proper car seat for their age and size. If you're uncertain, you can find out if you're using the right car seat here. Also make sure the car seat is properly installed. When your child outgrows the height or weight limits of the car seat, you can use a booster. Remember to have children ride in the backseat until they reach the age of 13.

Motor vehicle safety reduces the risk and severity of injury your child may suffer in an accident. If your child has suffered an injury in a motor vehicle accident, contact a Knoxville car accident attorney to assist you in pursuing your claim.
