Kids, sporting activities and personal injury in Tennessee

Summer brings young people out in droves, many of them eager to engage in sports activities. Some of these sports are supervised by an organization while others occur just between groups of friends. One thing they have in common is that the risk of personal injury is a factor in all sporting activities.

Like many of you, we are parents and we worry about the safety of our children when they play sports. This is particularly relevant with all of the recent findings about contact sports like football and head injuries. Some of the most disturbing of these statistics include:

  • More than 85 percent of the brains of deceased football players showed evidence of traumatic brain disease
  • Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) or brain disease is linked more strongly to sports than previously believed
  • Concussions or CTE can cause problems in how patients think and feel
  • Brain disease affects how a victim acts or reacts to situations

Of course, there are many other ways a child can suffer injury while playing sports. Simple broken bones for example, can often occur during these activities. Thankfully, most injuries are not life-threatening and much less severe than CTE, but they still require medical care and treatment.

If negligence led to your child's injury, you can offset many of the costs of treatment by seeking a legal remedy. For example, say your child was playing softball in a neighbor's yard and fell into an unsecured well, breaking his leg. Unless trespassing was an issue, it should not be difficult to hold the property owner legally and financially responsible for your child's personal injury.

To sum up, we just want to remind all Knoxville parents that encouraging your child to be active and to have fun is wonderful. At the same time, it is just as important to be aware of sporting dangers and to teach your children how to play and act responsibly.
