What could cause a social security disability claim denial?

The Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program helps individuals who are unable to continue working. The benefits provided by this program ensure people can keep paying their bills, receiving the right medical care and simply surviving during times of need. Each year, millions of people, including Tennessee residents, apply to receive SSDI.

Unfortunately, many of these claims result in denial, which can be devastating when you can no longer work for an income. Social Security Disability denials can occur for many reasons. Learning about these reasons before or while you are applying for benefits improves your chances of filing a successful application. Here are some of the most common reasons for denial.

Not following directions: Those applying for Social Security Disability must follow all of the directions required by the Social Security Administration (SSA). This includes continued cooperation with the SSA after you have already applied.

Too much income: The SSA uses a formula to identify whether an applicant is eligible to receive benefits. If your income exceeds the limitations of the formula, denial may ensue.

Disability associated with substance abuse: Like other government programs, the SSA may deny benefits centered on substance abuse. There may be exceptions to this rule that a disability attorney can explain to you in detail.

Short disability period: In most cases, you must be disabled for one year or longer to collect Social Security Disability. However, it is wise to apply anyway because the SSA considers claims on an individual basis.

A lawyer can offer additional information and advice about many aspects of your disability application.
